How comes Chernigov is more than 1300 years old and in 2007 we celebrated 1100 anniversary of the city?
The matter is that archeologists proved that the city existed in the 7th century. There was a settlement in the territory of modern city. It was located on the South-Western part of the Rampart and stayed there during 7-9th centuries. By the 10th century the territory expanded and turned to a city. It was fortificated very well. By the 10th century the city got the second line of fortifications and the territory of the settlement was equal the modern territory of the Rampart. We do not have any written sources of that time, and wooden buildings along with fortifications were destroyed. However with the help of archeological excavations today we have no doubt that at that time the territory was a strong castle and a spiritual center of the land. Any other proof needed? Our archeologists found a silver idol on the territory of the old college, it is related to pagan times, king`s gates of Boris and Gleb cathedral were made out of it later.
In 2007 we celebrated the 1100th anniversary of the city according to the first note about Chernigov in a chronicle. Chernigov was first mentioned in the chronicle by the year 907. Chernigov is mentioned by it`s name and as the second important city after Kiev.
