Was Chernigov really competing with Kiev?
Yes! It is hard to imagine it nowadays, still during the time of Kievan Rus Chernigov was the center of a very strong and powerful principality. It really was competing with Kiev. One of the examples – The Cathedral of our Savior in Chernigov is the first Christian church in Kievan Rus. Even Sophievskij Cathedral in Kiev was built several years later.
